How is your dog keeping cool on hot days? Do they soak up the sun or seek out every patch of shade they can find? Just like every season, summer brings its own challenges, and for dogs, that includes risks like heat stroke, water intoxication, and even toxic blue-green algae in lakes.
But that doesn’t mean summer has to be boring. With a little awareness and some creative thinking, you and your dog can still enjoy the season safely and comfortably.
Puck’s Hot Weather Routine
My dog Puck hates the heat. She might enjoy a few minutes of sunbathing, but most of her summer days are spent in our cool, air-conditioned basement, fast asleep and far from the sun.
It’s not until the evening, when the heat has mellowed, that she perks up and gets interested in doing something. Since the evenings are still pretty warm, we keep things indoors: a puzzle session in the basement or some fitness exercises to keep her body moving and her brain busy.
Smart Outdoor Time
We still enjoy outdoor time, just not during the peak heat of the day. Early morning walks along the dyke are perfect: cooler temperatures, fresh air, and space for Puck to run a bit. At home, we go for short, slow strolls in the yard.
And recently, we found a new favorite: pool time with her best friend Boukha. A dog pool opened up nearby and it’s been the perfect summer activity. After a good splash, I towel her dry and she’s ready to head back to her cool basement den for a well-deserved rest.
Keep the Body Moving; Just Not in the Heat
Mental and physical activity are both important for dogs, no matter the season. While long walks or hikes might be off the table during the hottest parts of the day, there are still plenty of great alternatives to keep your dog enriched and healthy.
In Short: Be Smart, Stay Cool, Have Fun
Summer doesn’t have to be all or nothing. With a little planning, you can keep your dog safe from the heat and give them the activity they need to feel good. Know your dog, watch for signs of overheating, and adjust your plans so you both stay cool and comfortable.
