How Much Are You REALLY Spending on Your Dog?
(Spoiler: Probably More Than You Think!)
We love our dogs, right? And when we love something, we tend to spend on it. So, how much are you really dropping on your paw-some friend?
Let's be honest, it's probably a lot! I know I do!
The "Necessities"
Let’s start with the essentials: food, vet visits, grooming, beds, training... these are the things we need to keep our dogs happy and healthy. No debate there—spending on these is just part of the job description when you’re a dog parent.
But then there are the extras, the fun stuff. You know what I’m talking about: new toys, fancy leashes, snazzy coats, even more toys, puzzles, enrichment, sport activities... the list goes on. Some of these are totally necessary for your dog’s happiness, but others might be more of a “treat yourself” kind of splurge.
And hey, I get it. Your dog deserves the world, especially around the holidays. But if you’re trying to save a little money this Christmas and still spoil your pup, I’ve got some ideas!
What Does Your Dog LOVE?
Before you start shopping, ask yourself: What makes your dog’s tail wag like crazy? Does your dog go absolutely bonkers for squeaky toys? Is their idea of heaven a good old-fashioned run in the field or puzzle-solving time with you?
For my dog Puck, aka #PuzzlePuck, it’s all about those tiny squeaky toys and puzzles. And, of course, she’s happiest when we’re playing together. That’s the magic ingredient: the time and attention you give your dog. So, why not incorporate that into their Christmas gift?
How to Make a Affordable Christmas Enrichment Gift Your Dog Will LOVE!
Now, let's get creative. Back to #PuzzlePuck—how can I gift her something special without spending a fortune?
First, I’m going to raid her toy basket. She’s got tons of tiny squeaky toys in there, many of which haven’t seen the light of day in months. So, I’ll pull a few out and give them a little refresher. I might even buy one or two new ones if I’m feeling extra generous (but let's keep it reasonable). Then, I’ll wrap them all up in a paper bag, which, let's be honest, is just as exciting as the toys themselves!
On Christmas Eve, I’ll place the bag under the tree, and I know what will happen next: #PuzzlePuck will “steal” the bag, rip it apart, and dive into the toys. When she starts squeaking away, I’ll join her in the fun and turn it into a game of catch me if you can! It’s a simple, joyful, and budget-friendly gift.
#PuzzlePuck’s second favourite activity? Puzzles! Luckily, I’ve got a stash of Christmas-themed dog puzzles that we only bring out during the holidays. They’re special, and the fact that we only play with them for two months a year makes them feel like even more of a treat. All I need to do is dig them out of storage and make sure we carve out some quality puzzle time. Easy peasy!
Your Turn!
Now it’s your turn to get creative. What does your dog love most? Is it the thrill of a game you play together? Or maybe it’s a special chew toy they can enjoy while snuggling up with you? There’s no need to break the bank—sometimes the best presents are the ones that come from spending time with your dog.
And to get your inspiration flowing, I’ll leave you with this super fun video of a Christmas tree puzzle you can easily fold yourself with a piece of fabric/fleece (80x80 cm)! Watch it, fold it, hide treats in it and see how you can make your pup’s Christmas just as paw-some without overspending.
Your dog will appreciate the time you spend with them more than anything—and that’s the true gift! 🎄🐾
